- Coeliac disease, originally thought to be largely confined to Northern Europe and Australasia and uncommon in North America and the Middle East, is now equally common in all these countries. It is still thought to be rare in the Orient and Sub-Saharan Africa although wheat consumption there is now of the same order as in Western Europe so CD maybe come more common in the future. - Long article in the NY Times about a three-year-old whose juvenile idiopathic arthritis was entirely resolved by going gluten-free. February 2013
- Gluten sensitivity biomarker coming soon. Interview on About.com with Dr. Alessio Fasano who is confident that a clinical trial now underway will pinpoint a biological marker for non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and that discovery should pave the way for the development of diagnostic tests for the condition.
If such a marker is identified it could help to clarify the controversial relationship between gluten sensitivity and autism and identify which autistic children might benefit from a gluten-free diet. January 2013
- Researchers move toward developing an enzyme which could break down gluten in the gut and which could be incorporated into pill. This would allow coeliacs to manage their condition by taking an enzyme before eating gluten in the same way that lactose intolerants can manage theirs by taking a lactase enzyme pill before ingesting lactose sugar. - Oral and dental issues such as enamel defects and mouth ulcers may be an indication of coeliac disease. December 2012
- New research indicates that repeated infections early in life increase the risk of developing coeliac disease. It is not known whether the problem is the infections themselves or the antibiotics frequently prescribed to treat them, antibiotics being known to seriously disrupt the gut microbiome. December 2012

- Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity – a lengthy correspondence in the BMJ between a gluten sensitive who spent 20 years getting progessively sicker and being repeatedly misadiagnosed (interstital cystitis, gall bladder) before a chance conversation on a forum suggested that he should exclude gluten and lactose from his diet, with dramatic results.
